Labiaplasty has grown in popularity in recent years all over the country as more women have discovered how this relatively simple procedure can improve quality of life. My experience with patients who want labiaplasty at my Chicago practice is that many are self-conscious or even physically uncomfortable due to concerns in this area of the body, and they’re excited to learn there’s a surgical solution.
Labiaplasty reduces or alters the labia minora, the labia majora, or both, which may be enlarged, asymmetrical, or stretched after childbirth or due to genetics. I usually perform this straightforward cosmetic procedure using local anesthesia with either oral or intravenous sedation. Because each patient’s anatomy is unique, I’m experienced in several techniques that I can customize to reshape the labia while preserving its sensation.
Although there are many factors that influence a woman’s decision to undergo labiaplasty, the 3 primary reasons include:
- Physical discomfort during exercise or sexual activity
- Feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness that affect sexual satisfaction
- Inability to wear certain styles of clothing or swimwear
It’s clear that labiaplasties are becoming more common. Statistics show the number of labiaplasty procedures increased by 44% from 2012 to 2013, and the number of surgeons performing the procedure increased from 21% to 29% in the past year alone.
Although there’s been a recent surge in labiaplasty patients and surgeons, it’s important to be sure your own doctor is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with this procedure for optimal results.
