Instead of offering helpful guidance, they more often lead to misplaced optimism or skepticism and can even contribute to lower self-confidence.

Can apps really show you what you would look like with a nose job?

FaceTune and other photo editing apps allow you to tweak your features so you can purportedly envision potential rhinoplasty results. With just a few taps, you can pinch in a narrower bridge, smooth away bumps, and shrink the size of your nose altogether. Instagram and Snapchat filters even have built-in “beauty filters” that reshape your nose, cheeks, chin, and other features to fit a predetermined “ideal.”

While these apps may give you a vague perception of what you would look like following a rhinoplasty, fillers, or other facial procedures, they fall very short in terms of accuracy. They rely on a single lighting scenario and camera angle to give you a 2D rendering that lacks depth and is not very true to your actual proportions. Even worse, this tweaking is being done by someone without a sophisticated understanding of facial anatomy, let alone experience in plastic surgery.

Relying solely on these apps may give you a false perception of what is possible. They can create unrealistic expectations that either make you believe you need surgical correction (when you may not) or make you think that surgery wouldn’t be able to give you the result you’re looking for (when it very well might).
