Dermal Fillers
Many of the visible signs of facial aging are due to the loss of volume and elasticity that comes with the breakdown of collagen. Chicago patients of Dr. Thomas Mustoe and Dr. Sammy Sinno can achieve beautiful, natural-looking correction of wrinkles, lines, and folds by replacing lost volume with injectable dermal fillers. At our practice in Chicago, lost collagen can be replaced with any of the major “next generation” fillers, or with fat harvested from your own body.

Nonsurgical Rejuvenation With Injectable Fillers
Treatment with injectable fillers involves injecting a substance into areas of the face that have lost volume with age. This substance replaces lost volume, and improves the appearance of lines, folds or wrinkles by “filling” or elevating the indentation. There are a variety of safe and effective products and treatments for replacing lost volume, each with its own unique characteristics. Dr. Mustoe or Dr. Sinno will go over your injectable filler options and help you to determine which one will best achieve your goals, and may also recommend BOTOX® Cosmetic for other facial wrinkles.

JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel
JUVÉDERM® is most commonly used for treating lines and folds on the lower face, particularly the nasolabial folds, or “parentheses,” that frame the mouth. This product is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, and provides volume and binds moisture beneath the skin. There is very little risk of allergic reaction with JUVÉDERM, as it is biocompatible and biodegradable. It is harmlessly eliminated by the body over the course of 6 to 9 months.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC
Another injectable filler from the JUVÉDERM family, VOLUMA XC is specifically formulated to restore volume to the cheeks for a plump, youthful look. Its thicker gel formula is designed for deep injection and durability, with results lasting up to 2 years. VOLUMA XC is also a hyaluronic acid filler, meaning it’s safe and biocompatible. It fills in sunken cheeks and provides a subtle “lifted” look.
RADIESSE®
RADIESSE® is another dermal filler that is primarily indicated for use around the mouth and chin. RADIESSE is not a hyaluronic acid filler; it is composed of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. This unique formulation allows RADIESSE to stimulate collagenesis — the production of your body’s own natural collagen. Once the gel carrier is broken down by the body, the microspheres remain, and the body builds a network of collagen fibers around them. Eventually, the microspheres dissolve, but the network of collagen fibers remains, adding volume at the treatment site. Results from RADIESSE may last up to a year or more in some patients.
Sculptra®
Sculptra® Aesthetic is made from poly-L-lactic acid – a synthetic substance which is biocompatible and biodegradable and has been safely used by physicians for many years. It is used to correct facial wrinkles and folds in the lower face by replacing collagen that has been lost with age. Unlike some other dermal fillers, Sculptra treatment is a gradual process, with results that emerge over several months. A full treatment of Sculptra Aesthetic involves an average of 3 injection sessions over a few months, with results that can last up to 2 years.
Fat Transfer
Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno specialize in facial rejuvenation through fat transfer, during which they use a patient’s own fat to add volume to various areas of the face. They also use fat transfer to enhance the results of cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and facelifts. Dr. Mustoe has more than 22 years of experience with the technique, which is also called autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection, and has even been recognized in a national publication (More Magazine) for his expertise. Fat transfer has evolved over time to maximize fat survival and minimize the need for revisions.
Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno can use harvested fat to improve the contours of the face and fill wrinkles and folds. Unlike with other injectable fillers, fat transfer requires recovery time; however, they prefer this technique for a variety of reasons, including:
- The filler is completely natural, so there is no risk of an adverse reaction
- Greater volumes of filler can be placed during the procedure
- Results last longer
Fat transfer is commonly performed as an office procedure. Fat for this treatment is harvested via liposuction with very fine cannulas from another part of the body such as the thighs, buttocks or abdomen. The fat is processed to remove excess moisture and damaged fat cells, then injected into the desired areas of the face. For optimal results, patients usually require 3 to 4 treatments over a 6-month period. Fat transferred to the face may last up to 3 years in some patients.
